The Kandy to Ella train in Sri Lanka is a wonderful ‘MUST DO experience and one I have had on my bucket list for some time. Not only for the beautiful scenery along the way, but also because of the friendly people. There are so many reasons why people heading to Sri Lanka rush to board the train from Kandy to Ella – click here to watch the video Kandy Train

Travelling by train is something very special and something I’ve always wanted to do. The Kandy to Ella train is definitely one of highlights for visiting Sri Lanka. We arrived at the Kandy station and had pre booked our ‘First Class’ tickets (which I would highly recommend!) and headed off on a scenic adventure. The scenery is quite spectacular indeed, with green hills covered in tea plantations waterfalls and epic views! It doesn’t go very fast and takes approximately 7 hours. I would highly recommend getting on at Nuwara Eliya and going to Ella (this is only 2.5 hours and is the most scenic part of the train!) AND you get to pass over one of the most iconic sights – the 9 Arches Bridge.

Here are my Top Tips…

⭐️take wipes and hand sanitiser with you

⭐️Take toilet roll with you (be warned, the toilets are NOT great and are rather smelly!)

⭐️Wipe and sanitise the seat, arms and folding table BEFORE sitting down

⭐️ Demodara (next stop after Ella to travel over the iconic 9 ARCHES bridge) OR get off at Ella station to see the 9 Arches bridge – this is a MUST

⭐️Go to the open doors of the carriage and take those all important pictures for Instagram!
