Kandy – This vibrant and bustling city in the Central Province is the last ancient capital city of Sri Lanka. It was made a world UNESCO heritage site in 1988. It is home to the Mahaweli River (236km) which is the longest river in Sri Lanka. I spent the morning at the outstanding Botanical Gardens – who knew it was the home to over 4000 different plant Species across its 147 acres. We opted for the buggy to take us round as it was rather hot. But if you want to spend a leisurely afternoon – this is definitely the place for you!
We saw bats, monkeys and the slowest growing tree in the world… a Tree growing just 2mm every 15 years! The Fern palm from Japan. Wow.
Next I visited the Kandy’s Sacred Temple of the Tooth. An opulent temple with lots of history inside it. We finished our magnificent day looking at how gem and jewels are mined, made and distributed. I’ve never seen so many precious jewels 💎 under one roof! We finished the evening with a super Fire Dance show at the Kandy Lake club before heading back to our hotel for the night!
